Kitchener drivers should prepare for significant travel disruptions this weekend as a section of Highway 85 will be fully shut down to accommodate the demolition of the Frederick Street bridge, according to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
The highway will be closed in both northbound and southbound directions beginning at 10 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, and is not expected to reopen until 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 7. During this period, motorists will not be able to access the highway from several key entry points, including Ottawa Street, Wellington Street, Edna Street, and Bruce Street.
As part of the demolition work, northbound lanes will be closed at Ottawa Street, while southbound access will be cut off at Wellington Street, effectively halting all traffic through the affected corridor. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes in advance and allow for additional travel time, especially during peak hours.
In addition to the highway closure, Frederick Street itself has already been shut down between Ann Street and Edna Street since Monday, December 1. This closure is necessary to prepare the area for the bridge demolition and future reconstruction as part of a larger infrastructure upgrade.
The Frederick Street bridge replacement is a major component of an ongoing transportation improvement project in the region. According to the MTO, Frederick Street is not expected to reopen until November 2026, and the full bridge replacement project is projected to be completed by June 2027.
Motorists have already been dealing with multiple lane reductions along Highway 85 in recent months due to ongoing construction. Further updates and detour information are available through official MTO channels.
Officials emphasized that all scheduled dates and times remain subject to change depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances. Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed and follow posted signage for safety.
